Aston Villa’s Under-21s reached the PL2 quarter-finals after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Southampton at Staplewood.
- Yeimar Mosquera scored the winning spot-kick after Sam Proctor saved from Aston Daley
- Trai-Varn Mulley and Luka Lynch were the standout performers with a goal and assist each
- Jimmy Shan’s side face either Manchester City or Arsenal in the quarter-finals
A stunning start. Southampton strike from halfway
The evening began in the most extraordinary fashion. Just five minutes in, Southampton’s Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh lobbed Sam Proctor from over 50 yards with an audacious finish that left everyone inside Staplewood Training Ground stunned.
It was a goal that would have deflated many sides, but Jimmy Shan’s Young Lions responded with admirable composure and character.
Yeimar Mosquera restored parity just after the half-hour mark, rising highest to head home Trai-Varn Mulley’s corner from eight yards.
The momentum had shifted decisively. Villa finished the first half the stronger side and carried that intent directly into the second period.
Mulley and Lynch take control. Villa surge to 3-1
The second half belonged emphatically to Villa.
The Mulley-Lynch combination proved irresistible: the pair combining for both goals that pushed Shan’s side into what appeared to be a commanding advantage.
Mulley headed home from Lynch’s cross to make it 2-1, before the latter fired home from the edge of the area after Mulley’s cutback to make it 3-1.
Ashton McWilliams produced a crucial goal-line clearance to keep the advantage intact as Southampton pushed back. However, Villa’s defensive resilience ultimately deserted them in the closing stages.
Sutura Kakay halved the deficit in the 77th minute before Moses Sesay’s deflected free-kick in the second minute of stoppage time levelled at 3-3, sending a tie that had looked settled into extra-time.
Proctor the hero. Shootout glory at Staplewood
Thirty additional minutes produced no further goals, leaving the tie to be decided from the spot.
The shootout was an absorbing and nervy affair, with Villa goalkeeper Sam Proctor providing the decisive moment, saving from Aston Daley to give Mosquera the opportunity to seal the tie.
The young defender stepped up and sent Dylan Moody the wrong way to complete a 5-4 victory.

Quarter-Final Awaits — City or Arsenal Next
Villa ended their regular PL2 season in 11th place, but have beaten a Southampton side that finished sixth and reached last year’s final.
The quarter-final draw pits Shan’s side against either Manchester City or Arsenal: a mouth-watering prospect that reflects just how far this group of young players has progressed.
