Nottingham Forest 0-0 Aston Villa HT: Player ratings as Martinez produces wonder save

It’s a stalemate at the City Ground as the whistle blows for the break, but the opening 45 minutes belonged to Emiliano Martínez. While the scoreline remains deadlocked, the World Cup winner produced a stunning, fingertip save that stands as the definitive highlight of the half.

  • Rogers had the best Villa chance — curling effort well saved by Ortega in the 28th minute
  • Martinez produced a world-class double save to deny Igor Jesus in the 35th minute
  • John McGinn made his 300th start for Aston Villa on a historic European night
  • Villa started brightly but Forest grew into the game — it is finely balanced heading into the second half

A breathless and evenly contested half

The opening exchanges were electric. Villa started the brighter: Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia were causing Nottingham Forest all sort’s of problems with clever movement, but Vitor Pereira’s side settled well and grew into the game as the half progressed.

The key tactical battle centred on Forest’s press against Villa’s build-up, with Youri Tielemans occasionally finding pockets of space but the final ball into danger area proving elusive throughout.

The City Ground atmosphere delivered exactly the intensity both managers had anticipated. Villa attempted to slow the tempo, taking their time over throw-ins and goal-kicks while Forest looked to exploit the electric home crowd whenever they generated momentum.

The best chance fell to Rogers, whose curling 28th-minute effort was well saved by Stefan Ortega. The moment of the half, however, belonged entirely to Emi Martinez.

Half-Time Player Ratings

Emiliano Martinez — 9 The performance of the half, and arguably the save of the season. His instinctive double stop to deny Igor Jesus from six yards, using his left arm to hook the ball off the line after his initial save, was nothing short of miraculous.

Composed with the ball under Fulham’s intense press throughout. Kept Villa in the tie single-handedly in that moment.

Matty Cash — 6 Quietly effective rather than spectacular. Provided decent delivery from the right and won his individual battles, but has not been able to contribute as an attacking outlet yet. His cross deflected behind for a corner was typical of a half spent mostly containing rather than creating.

Ezri Konsa — 7 Commanding and assured throughout. Read the game intelligently, dealt with Forest’s crosses into the box, and used the ball sensibly under pressure. The most composed performer in the defensive unit during Forest’s best spell of the half.

Pau Torres — 7 Excellent recovery defending when Wood threatened at the back post — Buendia providing crucial assistance. Dominant in the air, composed in possession, and a reassuring presence against a physical Forest frontline. His header clearing Aina’s deep cross was typical of his reading of the game.

Lucas Digne — 6 Solid defensively and unlucky to have a potential penalty shout waved away when Hutchinson’s cross appeared to strike his arm. Did not contribute as much going forward as Villa would have liked — his long throw created a moment of danger but ultimately came to nothing.

Amadou Onana — 7 The decision to play him despite his fitness concerns looks fully justified. His snapping tackle to win the ball back in midfield was a reminder of exactly what Villa have been missing in recent weeks. Energetic, combative, and providing the defensive screen that Bogarde could not replicate at Fulham.

Youri Tielemans — 6.5 Worked tirelessly across both phases of play. Found pockets of space on several occasions and had a deflected shot from 25 yards that tested Ortega. His positioning and defensive work complemented Onana’s aggression perfectly — the partnership looks considerably more balanced than the Bogarde-Tielemans combination.

John McGinn — 6 A historic 300th start for the club but the captain has not yet found his best level on the night. His air-kick from a corner drew laughs from the home crowd. Nevertheless, his pressing and energy have been characteristic throughout and his influence typically grows as games develop.

Emiliano Buendia — 7 One of Villa’s more effective performers in the first half. Clever movement, intelligent pressing, and a crucial intervention when Wood looked to have found space at the back post. Moved the ball a touch slowly at times but his combination play with Watkins gave Forest genuine problems.

Morgan Rogers — 6.5 Villa’s most dangerous attacking outlet. His 28th-minute curling effort represented the best chance of the half for either side. His runs in behind and movement across the Forest defensive line created confusion on multiple occasions — and if the final ball improves in the second half, he could be decisive.

Ollie Watkins — 6 Excellent hold-up play, intelligent movement, and a willingness to press Forest’s centre-backs that created space for teammates. Unhappy not to get a free-kick after being barged over by Dominguez. Went close with a driving run in the opening minutes. Involved in everything positive going forward.

The verdict: Martinez keeps the tie alive

Goalless, but far from boring. Martinez has been the difference between a level tie and a deficit heading into the break. The second half will determine everything. Come on Villa.
