- Aston Villa were narrowly beaten by Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final at the City Ground
- It is their third semi-final under Unai Emery, with a current aggregate of 10-2
- After the game, Stilian Petrov demanded that Villa “have to perform in these big games”
Aston Villa legend Stiliyan Petrov insists that his former side needs to start performing in big games, after their narrow 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final.
The game played out as Unai Emery expected, with his team trying to stifle the home crowd and slow things down. At times they controlled, but there was little to split the two teams, and it looked like a 0-0 finish would occur.
That was until Lucas Digne’s calamitous error, which saw a penalty awarded to Forest for a handball. The Frenchman had his arms raised as he tried to block a cross from Omari Hutchinson right on the byline. Initially, a goal-kick was given, as the assistant official thought the ball had gone out of play, but after a VAR review, the decision was overturned.
It was a defining moment in the match, as there were few opportunities created from either side. Despite the goal, Emery was happy with his team’s performance and wanted to ensure they didn’t concede another, trying to go for the equaliser.
Overall, they are still very much in the tie. A one-goal deficit is minimal when the second leg is at home with a raucous Villa Park crowd. However, the persistent tale of the players failing to turn up in significant games lives on.
Semi-Final failures
After the game, Petrov spoke on TNT Sports about Villa’s need to start performing in big games.
“If you want to play in the Champions League, and you want to play in a Europa League final, you have to perform in these games.
“These are big games. Those players must understand that to get those Champions League spots, you have to win. Home game again (on Sunday), what an opportunity.
“Usually in football, you get the games so quick. You can get things right if you got them wrong, so they’ll have the opportunity to put things right, and to build up for next Thursday.”
With this tie being their third semi-final in two years, Villa currently has an aggregate score of 10-2.
In the Europa Conference League semi-final in 2024 against Olympiacos, they lost 6-2 over two legs. In the FA Cup semi-final last year, Crystal Palace hammered them 3-0. And now Thursday night, they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest, albeit in a much closer game.
But the same story continues. The players haven’t been good enough in these high-pressure situations, where there is a lot at stake.
Legacy
For this group of players, next Thursday could be their last chance to put a stamp on their legacy at Villa.
Do they want to be remembered as the team that almost got over the line, but didn’t have the mentality or guile to win?
Or do they want to be remembered as the team that delivered the first trophy at the club for thirty years? It’s now or never.
