McGinn sets sights on history. “There are only 16 people on Thursday who can change it”

John McGinn has delivered a rallying cry ahead of Thursday’s second leg insisting only 16 people at Villa Park can write the next chapter.

  • The Scotland captain is expected to recover from a hamstring niggle to start against Forest
  • McGinn insisted financial restrictions have made the core group’s achievements even more remarkable
  • The 31-year-old wants to become the first Villa captain since Andy Townsend to lift a major trophy
  • He referenced Emery’s VAR fury as evidence of the manager’s “insatiable desire to win”

“The lows make the highs higher”

John McGinn has never spoken with more clarity or conviction than he did ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg.

The Villa captain addressed everything, the financial constraints, the previous semi-final exits, the criticism, the hunger, and wove it all into a single, powerful message about what Thursday night represents for this specific group of players.

The lows are low, but they make the highs higher,” McGinn said, referencing a quote from actor and Villa supporter David Bradley. “You feel the hurt of the semi-finals and that drives you on to do the opposite.”

Those previous exits, to Olympiacos in the Conference League and Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, have not broken this squad. They have sharpened it.

His most powerful words, however, concerned the unique nature of what Villa are attempting.

Clubs are spending a billion pounds trying to achieve what we are achieving,” the 31-year-old stated. “What we are continuing to achieve with the restrictions is incredible. It is a credit not only to the boss and those involved in the club but the core group of players.”

That perspective, placing Villa’s journey in the context of modern football’s financial arms race, captures something genuinely extraordinary about what Emery has built.

The core group. A bond money cannot buy

McGinn was equally specific about why financial restrictions have paradoxically strengthened Villa’s chances.

The rules that limited their spending have kept together a core of experienced, battle-hardened players who share an understanding of exactly what this club means.

Ezri, Cashy, Tyrone, Emi, myself, Ollie players who know what playing for Aston Villa means and have been on the journey together,” he stated. “I don’t think there is pressure in the sense of that coming to an end, but what it would do is make success even sweeter than a group created solely by money.

That bond built across years of shared experiences, from the Championship to the Europa League semi-finals is not something any transfer fee can replicate.

McGinn is expected to recover from a hamstring niggle to start on Thursday. His availability would be enormously significant both statistically and symbolically.

Villa’s win rate with the captain starting this season stands at 58%, compared to just 25% without him.

No more nearly men. McGinn demands the next step

The Scotland captain was direct about Villa’s reputation for falling at the semi-final stage.

Are we aware of it? Of course we are. It makes us more determined to go and take one step further.” He also dismissed any suggestion of the underdog mentality that once defined the club’s European approach. “We don’t really have that underdog mentality anymore. We are starting to embrace being favourites. Thursday night is huge for us as a group and as a club.

His admiration for Emery, whose post-match VAR outburst after the first leg he cited as evidence of the manager’s burning desire, was equally heartfelt.

There is no one at the club more determined to succeed than the manager. He is a winner who has proven over time why and how.”

Only 16 people can change It

McGinn’s closing message was simple, direct, and entirely right. “There are only 16 people on Thursday night who can change it.”

No tactics, no transfers, no statistics matter after kick-off. Only the players on the pitch. This squad deserves better than a nearly-men legacy. Thursday is the night to prove it.
