Aston Villa will face Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday 20 May. Here is everything you need to know.

  • The final takes place at Tupras Stadium in Istanbul, home of Besiktas, with a capacity of just under 44,000
  • Kick-off in the UK is at 8pm BST on Wednesday 20 May
  • Freiburg reached their first ever European final by beating Braga 4-3 across two legs
  • Victory would give Emery a record fifth Europa League title and end Villa’s 30-year trophy wait

The stage is set for a historic night in Istanbul as Aston Villa and SC Freiburg prepare to clash in the 2026 UEFA Europa League final

For Villa, this is a golden opportunity to reclaim their status as European heavyweights and finally end a 30-year major trophy drought. For Freiburg, it is a fairytale moment, marking their first-ever appearance in a major European final.

At the heart of the narrative is Villa’s manager, Unai Emery. Often called the “King of the Europa League,” Emery is chasing a record-extending fifth title in this competition. His tactical mastery has guided the Villans through a dominant knockout campaign, fueled by a squad that blends high-octane attacking football with defensive resilience.

The Road to Istanbul

Both teams had to overcome significant first-leg deficits in the semi-finals to book their place in Turkey.

  • Aston Villa (4-1 on aggregate vs Nottingham Forest): After a narrow 1-0 loss at the City Ground, Villa Park witnessed a masterclass in the return leg. Villa overwhelmed Forest with a 4-0 victory, featuring a quickfire double from captain John McGinn, a penalty from Emiliano Buendía, and an opener from Ollie Watkins.
  • SC Freiburg (4-3 on aggregate vs Braga): The German side pulled off a gritty comeback after trailing from the first leg in Portugal. Playing at home, they capitalized on an early Braga red card to win 3-1 on the night. Defender Lukas Kübler was the unlikely hero, scoring twice to ensure Freiburg reached their first-ever European showpiece

The Date, The Venue, The Stage

Wednesday 20 May. Tupras Stadium. Istanbul, Turkey. Those four words represent the culmination of an extraordinary European journey that began in the group stages and has produced some of the most memorable nights in Aston Villa’s modern history.

The Tupras Stadium, home of 16-time Turkish champions Besiktas, holds just under 44,000 supporters. It is a compact, atmospheric venue that will be entirely appropriate for a final of this magnitude. Villa supporters will be making the trip to Turkey in enormous numbers after Thursday’s stunning 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Villa Park [LINK] confirmed their place in the club’s first major European final since 1982.

Freiburg make history

Aston Villa’s opponents in Istanbul are Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, who reached their first ever European final by overcoming Portuguese outfit Braga 4-3 across the two semi-final legs.

It is a historic achievement for the German club, and they will arrive in Istanbul with nothing to lose and everything to gain against a Villa side carrying the weight of 30 years without a major trophy.

Freiburg are a disciplined, well-organised and tactically coherent side. They will not be overawed by the occasion. Emery will know them well from his years in German football and preparation for this specific opponent will have begun the moment Thursday’s final whistle sounded at Villa Park.

Emery’s record – Chasing history

The Europa League final presents Unai Emery with the opportunity to claim a record fifth title in the competition, surpassing the seven-time winners Sevilla as the most decorated individual in the tournament’s history. He won three consecutive titles with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016, before adding a fourth with Villarreal in 2021. No manager has ever won five. Istanbul could change that.

For Villa, the significance extends beyond Emery’s personal records. The club has not lifted a major trophy since the 1996 League Cup. A generation of supporters has waited. Thursday proved the team can produce their best when it matters most. Istanbul is the destination. History is the prize.

Freiburg are a worthy opponent and their first European final deserves respect. However, with Emery’s unmatched expertise in this competition, Villa Park’s momentum behind the squad, and a group of players who have just produced one of the greatest nights in the club’s recent history: this feels like destiny. Thirty years of waiting. One final. One chance. Go and get it.
