Burnley vs Aston Villa preview: team news, predicted XI and where to watch on Sunday

Share

Aston Villa travel to Turf Moor on Sunday looking to end a five-match away winless run against a relegated Burnley side with nothing to play for.

  • Kick-off is at 2pm live on Sky Sports and Now TV
  • Villa sit fifth on 58 points, six clear of Bournemouth with three games remaining
  • Emery could rotate heavily, McGinn and Watkins potential rests ahead of Liverpool and Istanbul
  • Burnley have won just once in their last 26 Premier League matches

The Context. Champions League focus remains

Thursday’s extraordinary 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest has delivered one of the greatest nights in Villa’s modern European history. However, Emery made his priorities abundantly clear in his post-match reaction: “if we lose the final, we achieve nothing”. The Premier League remains equally non-negotiable. Sunday represents an opportunity to ease Champions League qualification anxiety heading into Friday’s defining clash with Liverpool and the Europa League final against Freiburg on Wednesday 20 May.

Villa sit five points and one place behind Liverpool in fourth. Six points separate Emery’s side from Bournemouth in sixth with three games remaining. The mathematics are straightforward. Win on Sunday and the gap grows. Drop points and the pressure intensifies dramatically.

Burnley. Nothing to play for

Mike Jackson’s relegated Clarets arrive at this fixture with their Championship status confirmed and their season effectively over. Burnley have won just once in their last 26 Premier League games, a record that places them among the division’s worst performers of the entire campaign. They are winless in nine top-flight matches since a stunning 3-2 victory at Crystal Palace, seven of which have been defeats. Their home record offers little additional encouragement. Martin Dubravka has already made 127 saves this season: a statistic that reflects the relentless pressure Burnley’s defence has faced throughout a miserable campaign.

Zian Flemming needs one more goal to join Danny Ings and Chris Wood in reaching double figures for the season: a minor personal milestone that provides the Dutchman’s only meaningful motivation on Sunday. Burnley’s injuries are significant: Josh Cullen, Connor Roberts, and Jordan Beyer all remain sidelined. Axel Tuanzebe is nearing a return from an Achilles problem but may not feature.

Team News. Rotation expected after Thursday’s exertions

Emery faces a delicate squad management challenge heading into one of the most congested final weeks in the club’s recent history. Thursday’s heroics at Villa Park will have taken a physical toll, particularly on McGinn and Watkins, who both played pivotal roles in the semi-final victory. Both could be rested on Sunday with the Liverpool fixture and Istanbul firmly in mind.

Lamare Bogarde is expected to partner Tielemans in midfield with Onana still recovering from his calf injury. Kamara and Alysson remain unavailable. Jadon Sancho and Tammy Abraham are likely to start — providing cover for the rested starters while keeping fresh legs available for the week’s bigger tests.

Predicted Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Lindelöf, Mings, Maatsen; Bogarde, Tielemans; Sancho, Barkley, Rogers; Abraham.

Predicted Burnley XI: Dubravka; Walker, Ekdal, Esteve, Hartman; Humphreys, Laurent, Ward-Prowse; Tchaouna, Flemming, Anthony.

The historical record. Villa are in control

Villa have won their last three Premier League fixtures against Burnley, as many as they had managed in their previous ten combined. They have also won five and drawn three of nine matches against sides already relegated this season. The statistical picture is overwhelmingly in the visitors’ favour and a Burnley side with no motivation and a depleted squad should present a manageable challenge even with significant rotation.

The five-match away winless run must end eventually. A relegated opponent at Turf Moor, with the Europa League final just five days away, represents the ideal opportunity.

Rotation is entirely justified given what lies ahead, but the players selected on Sunday must show far greater desire and intensity than those who capitulated against Tottenham. A win here could mathematically confirm Champions League football and allow Emery to focus entirely on Istanbul. Anything less would be another unwelcome distraction at the worst possible time. Take care of business, rotate sensibly, and keep the momentum flowing.
