Watkins makes feelings clear after Burnley draw. “If you can’t win, then don’t lose”

Ollie Watkins declared the 2-2 draw at Burnley a “good point” despite Villa letting a lead slip against already-relegated opposition.

  • Watkins scored his 17th goal of the season, only bettered once in his Villa career, in 2023-24
  • Jaidon Anthony put Burnley ahead before Villa fought back only to concede an equaliser within three minutes
  • The draw moves Villa four points clear of sixth-placed Bournemouth in the Champions League race
  • Friday’s home clash with Liverpool now becomes crucial an 8pm kick-off at Villa Park

“Valuable point, but disappointing we let it slip”

Ollie Watkins was measured and honest in his assessment of a frustrating afternoon at Turf Moor. Villa arrived in Lancashire less than 72 hours after one of the greatest nights in the club’s recent history and the physical and emotional toll of Thursday’s extraordinary 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest was visibly apparent throughout the 90 minutes.

“It was a really tough game,” Watkins told the media. “As you’ve seen in recent weeks, they have become a lot stronger. Manchester City came here and only won 1-0, it’s always difficult to come here.” The 30-year-old acknowledged the frustration of surrendering a lead. “It’s disappointing that we got in front and let it slip away. But in the end it’s a good point: if you can’t win, then don’t lose.” That pragmatic philosophy reflects both Watkins’ character and the broader context of a squad managing an extraordinary final fortnight.

The game itself followed a chaotic pattern. Jaidon Anthony put the already-relegated Clarets ahead in the first half, prompting Villa to respond with the fight and determination that has defined their best moments this season. Watkins levelled the tie before firing Villa ahead in the second half only for Burnley to equalise inside three minutes. The draw was ultimately a fair reflection of a difficult afternoon for both sides.

The Europa League hangover. 48 hours is not enough

Watkins was equally candid about the physical demands of playing three days after the Forest second leg. His honesty captured the reality facing any squad operating across multiple competitions at the business end of a long season.

“We had an amazing result in Europe a few days ago and the amount of energy and effort you put into those games, you’re leaving it all on the pitch,” he stated. “To go again and recover in 48 hours is tough. We’re playing against a team that are strong and have a point to prove, trying to get as many points as they can before the end of the season. It’s always difficult when you’re playing against teams that don’t play in midweek and have a lot of energy.”

That specific observation, the energy imbalance between a European finalist and a relegated side with nothing to lose, explains much of Burnley’s improved second-half performance. Mike Jackson’s players had nothing to fear and everything to gain. Villa had everything to protect.

Watkins’ goal. Keeper made the decision for him

The England striker’s 17th goal of the season arrived in characteristic fashion, Emiliano Martinez finding him with a long ball upfield before the Burnley goalkeeper’s rush off his line made the finish straightforward. “Long ball over the top, it actually hit my shoulder,” Watkins smiled. “The keeper came out and made my mind up for me.” He also reflected on a first-half goal ruled out by VAR for a marginal offside. “I was disappointed because I felt it was a great team goal. I think I need to get smaller boots!”

The goal means Watkins has only ever scored more in a single Villa season once, his outstanding 2023-24 campaign. His consistency across a gruelling schedule has been one of the defining individual stories of the entire season.

Friday night is Liverpool at Villa Park

Watkins immediately redirected attention toward Friday’s crucial final home game of the season against Liverpool. His confidence was quiet but unmistakable. “We’re back at Villa Park against Liverpool, we always do well there. We always make it difficult for them, and it’s going to be an enjoyable last home game of the season.” Villa need a victory to potentially confirm Champions League qualification, with Bournemouth four points behind and two games remaining.

The draw is frustrating, but Watkins is right to contextualise it honestly. Asking a squad to produce maximum effort 48 hours after one of the most emotionally and physically demanding nights of the season is unrealistic. The point keeps Villa four clear of Bournemouth. Friday against Liverpool is the game that matters. Get through that and focus entirely on Istanbul.
