Aston Villa to launch €25 million opening for Real Sociedad star Jon Martín
  • Real Sociedad’s Jon Martín is attracting serious interest from Aston Villa
  • Reports suggest that Villa are preparing a €25 million (£21.6 million) opening offer
  • Real Sociedad are holding out for his €50 million (£43.2 million) release clause

Aston Villa are said to be preparing a €25 million proposal for Real Sociedad centre-back Jon Martín. Unai Emery has personally greenlit the pursuit of the 20-year-old, as he searches for high-calibre defensive reinforcements.

Villa’s pursuit of top-tier talent continues, as the need to reduce the average age of the squad is at its peak. They have one of the oldest squads in the Premier League, making this summer a priority to begin future-proofing their ambitions.

However, strict financial constraints heavily dictate Villa’s transfer window. Specifically, UEFA’s Squad Cost Rules (SCR) and Football Earning Rules.

They must navigate this tight financial tightrope by targeting high-upside, younger profiles whose long-term value outweighs immediate expenditure, moving away from spending on player for the here and now.

This brings them to the Spanish market where, according to Ekrem Konur from SportsBoom, Villa are planning an opening €25 million (£21.6 million) bid for Jon Martín.

Emery sees the 20-year-old as an ideal asset that will significantly elevate the quality and depth of their defensive rotation ahead of another congested campaign.

Real Sociedad holding firm

Martín has experienced an exceptional breakout trajectory in Spain, cementing his spot with 25 appearances and 2,250 minutes in the 2025/26 La Liga season. He ranks in the top 15% of centre-backs in the Spanish first division, for defensive contributions, duels won, aerial duels won, and interceptions.

Despite Villa’s opening proposal, completing the deal will be a major challenge. Real Sociedad’s management maintains an uncompromising stance on the player, with club directors refusing to look favourably upon the opening €25 million package.

He recently signed a long-term commitment keeping him in San Sebastián until June 2031, a contract that features a steep €50 million release clause.

The Basque side intends to hold out for maximum valuation, viewing Martín as a foundational block for their future aspirations. Furthermore, heavyweights like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal have kept tabs on his development, indicating that competition could swiftly intensify if a bidding war begins.

Konur indicates that the Champions League factor and title ambitions will be decisive factors should official negotiations take place.

Villa’s focus on San Sebastián highlights a broader recruitment strategy. Beyond Martín, the English club has actively monitored other emerging Basque talents, including winger Ander Barrenetxea, as part of an ongoing scouting offensive.

While the initial €25 million offer faces immediate resistance at the Anoeta stadium, it establishes a firm statement of intent from the Premier League side.

Having previously transformed the Villans from relegation fighters into European contenders, Emery is determined to utilise his Spanish connections to win the race for one of La Liga’s most coveted defensive prospects.

Whilst he will no doubt be a great addition, the club must decide whether he is worth a significant portion of their budget, given their need to bring in new wingers as well.
