Marcus Rashford has preferred destination revealed as a return to Aston Villa looks unlikely
  • David Ornstein from The Athletic has revealed Marcus Rashford’s preferred choice of club this summer
  • Aston Villa have retained an interest since his loan spell in the second half of the 2024/25 season
  • A return to Villa Park now looks extremely unlikely

Marcus Rashford is highly unlikely to return to Aston Villa this summer, dealing a significant blow to the possibility of a reunion with the forward.

While Villa fans have closely monitored the 28-year-old’s availability following his previous loan stint at Villa Park during the 2024–25 campaign, the latest factual data indicates that a return to the Midlands is now highly improbable.

According to David Ornstein from The Athletic, a combination of a newly revealed contract clause, fierce market competition, and the player’s own career preferences has effectively ruled Villa out of the running.

Release clause

Ornstein reports Rashford is available via a £40 million release clause embedded in his Manchester United contract. The clause is valid for the vast majority of clubs, but the Red Devils have explicitly excluded Manchester City and Liverpool.

There is interest from several Premier League clubs, as well as abroad, but no offer has yet come to the table. As things stand, the Englishman will return to United next month after the World Cup for pre-season.

Barcelona factor

The sudden prominence of the £40 million clause follows a breakdown in talks with Barcelona. Rashford spent the 2025/26 season on loan in Spain, contributing 8 goals and 7 assists across 32 La Liga appearances to help the club secure the league title.

Barcelona held an exclusive option to sign Rashford permanently for a discounted €30 million. However, due to the club’s ongoing, severe financial regulatory constraints, that option officially expired without being exercised.

While Barcelona remain interested in negotiating a secondary loan deal, Manchester United prefer a permanent sale to completely remove Rashford’s salary from their books.

Rashford’s preference

The definitive blow to any remaining Villa hopes rests on Rashford’s personal career plan. Ornstein reports that the forward has a preference for a move to a European club rather than to an English club.

However, if a departure to Europe is not possible this summer, then Rashford would prefer to see out the remainder of his contract at Old Trafford, which ends in 2028.

Ultimately, while Rashford retains a fondness for Villa following his previous time at the club, a summer return is firmly off the table. His explicit desire to either continue his career in continental Europe or fight for his place at Manchester United effectively eliminates Villa from the equation.

With Roberto Olabe and Unai Emery looking to build a squad capable of consistent elite performance, Villa’s recruitment team will now officially pivot away from the United academy graduate to pursue alternative attacking targets in the market.
