Arsenal have reportedly registered tentative interest in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as Mikel Arteta weighs up his next defensive move.
The Telegraph reports that Konsa is on Arsenal’s radar, with Villa likely to value the England international at around £60m.
The Sun has also covered the Arsenal interest, noting that the 28-year-old has raised his profile during England’s World Cup campaign.
Villa have little reason to encourage a cut-price deal. Konsa has two years left on his contract, can play at centre-back or right-back, and remains one of Unai Emery’s most trusted senior defenders.
The financial backdrop makes the story more sensitive. Sky Sports reported this week that Villa had been fined €22.5m by UEFA for breaching squad-cost rules, with €15m suspended subject to continued compliance.
But Villa’s stance on Morgan Rogers has already shown the market their mood. Read Aston Villa reported this week that the club value Rogers at a British-record £130m, underlining how strongly they intend to protect Emery’s core.
Konsa therefore sits in an awkward middle ground. He is valuable enough to draw elite interest, but too important for Villa to lose cheaply.
Unless Arsenal move well beyond tentative admiration, Villa’s message should be simple: £60m is the starting point, not the invitation.
