Aston Villa’s summer has brought more upheaval than Unai Emery expected, but the club’s early response looks organised rather than panicked.
Chelsea have agreed a British-record £117m deal for Morgan Rogers, shortly after Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United. Amadou Onana is also expected to miss much of the campaign after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury at the World Cup.
Sky Sports has described the situation as an unexpected rebuild for a side preparing to return to the Champions League.
Villa turn record Rogers sale into rebuild
The losses are significant. Tielemans controlled the tempo of Emery’s midfield, while Rogers developed into one of Villa’s main attacking threats.
Villa’s £117m agreement with Chelsea will remove a player who scored 14 goals and supplied 11 assists in 55 appearances last season.
However, the fee gives Villa considerable room to reshape an ageing squad. Emery would have preferred to keep the core of the side that won the Europa League, but a record sale offers the chance to lower the average age and add players suited to the next phase of his project.
Villa have already completed the signing of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg. The 20-year-old impressed for Switzerland at the World Cup and can operate through midfield or in wider attacking positions.
Manzambi should not be presented as a direct Rogers replacement. He is younger, less experienced and will need time to settle in the Premier League. His versatility still gives Emery another player who can carry the ball, receive between the lines and contribute in several roles.
The move also reflects a change in Villa’s recruitment. Their squad had the second-highest average age in the Premier League last season, so adding a high-upside player before his peak years is a sensible step.
Midfield work already under way
Villa are also close to completing a deal worth up to £38m for João Gomes after the Wolves midfielder underwent a medical at Bodymoor Heath.
Gomes would bring aggression, mobility and Premier League experience to a midfield missing Tielemans and Onana. Boubacar Kamara’s eventual return from injury would further strengthen the area, although Villa may still require another creative player to replace Tielemans’ passing range.
The wider rebuild remains unfinished. Rogers carried the ball over distance, created chances and offered goals from several positions. Villa need another winger or attacking midfielder who can provide immediate output rather than relying entirely on Manzambi’s development.
Emery’s record offers Villa reassurance
Emery has dealt with important departures before. Douglas Luiz, Moussa Diaby, Jhon Duran and Jacob Ramsey all left during his tenure, yet Villa continued to progress and ended last season with a major trophy and Champions League qualification.
The current challenge is larger because several problems have arrived together. Villa are losing two central figures, coping with a major injury and preparing for another demanding European campaign.
There is still pressure on the club to spend the Rogers fee well. The opening moves, however, suggest Emery and the recruitment team were prepared for change. Manzambi and Gomes add youth, energy and flexibility, while further attacking business should follow.
Villa’s summer cannot be judged as a success yet. The shape of the rebuild is becoming clearer, and Emery has already been given the first pieces needed to keep the club competitive.
