Aston Villa suffered a disastrous start to the 2026/27 Premier League season as Brighton cruised to a 4-0 victory at the Amex Stadium. Victor Lindelöf scored an early own goal before Maxim De Cuyper and Jack Hinshelwood put the game beyond Unai Emery’s side, with João Gomes then sent off on his Premier League debut.
All four Brighton goals arrived during a remarkable opening 31 minutes as Villa’s heavily changed side collapsed.
Emery was already without Ollie Watkins and Emi Martínez, who were both absent from the matchday squad, but the scale of what followed will be far more concerning.
Brighton punish disastrous Aston Villa start
Villa fell behind after only eight minutes.
De Cuyper capitalised on a defensive mistake and struck the post, with the ball rebounding off Lindelöf and into his own net.
Brighton doubled their advantage in the 18th minute when De Cuyper found the net himself.
Villa then completely unravelled.
Hinshelwood made it 3-0 after 30 minutes before scoring again barely a minute later to leave Emery’s side four goals behind before the game had even reached the interval.
Brighton’s entire four-goal advantage was established inside the opening 31 minutes.
The defensive performance was particularly alarming following Ezri Konsa’s £55million move to Arsenal, with Villa continuing to search for another centre-back.
Earlier on Sunday, Villa made an approach to Club Brugge for Joel Ordóñez as Emery attempts to rebuild that area of his squad.
João Gomes sees red on Premier League debut
An already dreadful afternoon became worse shortly before half-time.
Gomes was initially booked early in the contest before being dismissed in the 40th minute after kicking out at Brighton forward Georginio Rutter.
The midfielder’s red card left Villa attempting to negotiate the entire second half with 10 players and a four-goal deficit.
Read Aston Villa covered Gomes’ nightmare Premier League debut and dismissal as the incident unfolded.
Villa at least prevented Brighton from adding to the score after the interval, but there was never a realistic route back into the contest.
The damage had already been done.
Emery handed brutal warning after Villa rebuild
Sunday was the first Premier League examination of a Villa squad transformed during the summer.
Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Konsa are among the major players to have left, while uncertainty continues around Watkins and Martínez.
Watkins was omitted from the squad against Brighton amid continuing Al-Hilal interest, leaving Ross Barkley to start without a recognised senior centre-forward available.
Villa have moved quickly to replenish Emery’s options, and Leon Goretzka is now set to join after a full agreement was reached over his free transfer.
The opening league performance nevertheless exposed how difficult integrating such extensive change could prove.
A 4-0 defeat is damaging enough.
Conceding all four inside 31 minutes and losing a major summer signing to a red card before half-time gives Emery considerably more to address ahead of Villa’s next Premier League fixture.
