Aston Villa’s Sevilla trip hands Emery three selection tests

Aston Villa’s Friday friendly at Sevilla is more than a return to familiar surroundings for Unai Emery. It is a chance to answer selection questions before the Premier League resumes.

Villa will compete for the Antonio Puerta Trophy at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán during the international break. With players away on national-team duty and others working back from injury, Emery’s available group may look different from the side that beat Tottenham.

Can Harwood-Bellis build his case?

Taylor Harwood-Bellis has had limited opportunities since joining Villa on deadline day. Injuries across the defence have increased the importance of establishing reliable cover, but a friendly appearance should be judged on his actual role and minutes rather than treated as a promise of a league start.

Emery can use the Sevilla game to assess how the defender fits alongside his available partners. That matters before a demanding run of fixtures following the break.

Who can press for attacking minutes?

Tammy Abraham stayed at Villa after a proposed summer exit did not happen. With competition for places in attack, a substantial run-out in Spain would give him an opportunity to make his case.

Brian Madjo’s situation also deserves watching. Emery has said the teenager is due to rejoin group training during the break, as our Madjo injury update explains. That is a training target, not confirmation that he will be ready to face Sevilla.

Which returning players are actually available?

Villa’s international break tracker shows how widely Emery’s squad has been split. The final travelling group and matchday team sheet will matter more than any predicted XI published days in advance.

The friendly is scheduled for Friday 2 October at 7.30pm BST. Sevilla’s official announcement confirms Villa as the visitors for the tribute fixture.

There is a clear editorial follow-up once the teams arrive: who travelled, who returned from international duty, and whether anyone working back from injury made the squad. Our Sevilla match guide has the confirmed fixture details.
