Aston Villa have made a bid of around £500,000 to Stoke City for veteran midfielder Glenn Whelan, as per a report in the Birmingham Mail.
However, the bid had been rejected by the Premier League side so Villa will have to go back in with an increased offer if they are to sign the 33-year-old.
Stoke signed Darren Fletcher from West Brom, a move which will likely push Whelan down the pecking order and with his career coming to an end, he is looking to play as often as possible.

The Irish international joined Stoke nine-and-a-half years ago and helped take them from the Championship to an established Premier League side and Steve Bruce is hoping that he could do the same for Villa.
The Villa boss sees Whelan as a player who can come in and contribute from day one so expect another bid to be made in the coming days.
