Nottingham Forest have been dealt a significant injury blow ahead of their Europa League semi-final against Aston Villa.
- Hudson-Odoi has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after thigh surgery
- The winger suffered the injury during Forest’s quarter-final victory over Porto
- Key defender Murillo is also a doubt after being forced off against Burnley on Sunday
- Forest boss Vitor Pereira admitted he does not know the extent of Murillo’s problem
Hudson-Odoi ruled out. Surgery confirmed
Nottingham Forest have confirmed that Callum Hudson-Odoi will play no further part in their season after undergoing surgery on a right quadriceps injury.
The winger suffered the problem during Forest’s Europa League quarter-final against Porto last Thursday and subsequent specialist consultation determined that an operation was necessary.
In a club statement, Forest confirmed the 24-year-old “will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately” and is expected to return to full training during pre-season.
It is a cruel blow for a player who has been one of Forest’s most dynamic and dangerous wide threats throughout the campaign and his absence from both semi-final legs against Villa is a significant tactical disadvantage for Vitor Pereira’s side.
Hudson-Odoi took to Instagram to address supporters directly following the procedure. “Surgery was successful but definitely not the way I wanted to end the season,” he wrote.
“With God’s timing and plan, hopefully I’ll be back stronger and better than before.”
Those words will earn genuine sympathy from Villa supporters, but the absence they confirm is undeniably good news for Emery’s attacking players ahead of Thursday’s first leg at the City Ground.
Murillo doubt. Forest’s defensive concern
The injury concerns do not end with Hudson-Odoi.
Forest are also sweating over the fitness of key centre-back Murillo, who was forced off during Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley.
The Brazilian defender’s early withdrawal prompted immediate concern and Forest manager Vitor Pereira was unable to provide reassurance when speaking post-match.
“I don’t know,” the Portuguese boss admitted candidly. “I spoke to him and he said he thinks it is not serious.”
That response, honest but uncertain, leaves a significant question mark hanging over Forest’s defensive options ahead of what promises to be a physically demanding two-legged tie.
Murillo has been one of Forest’s most reliable performers this season: his absence alongside Hudson-Odoi’s confirmed departure would represent a substantial double blow for a side already facing the enormous challenge of overcoming Villa across two legs.
Villa’s opportunity, but Emery will demand full focus
Villa’s Spanish manager will be fully aware of Forest’s injury situation, but he will not allow his squad to treat it as anything other than additional context rather than automatic advantage.
Emery’s meticulous preparation has been a hallmark of every European tie this season and that approach will not change regardless of who Forest are able to name in their starting XI.
The path to Istanbul is clearing
Hudson-Odoi out. Murillo a serious doubt. Villa in form, confident, and with home advantage in the second leg.
The path to Istanbul is becoming clearer, but Forest remain dangerous opponents and Emery will ensure complacency never enters the building.
