Villa suffer lowest attendance in three decades

Villa crashed out of the Carabao Cup last night after a relatively poor performance, but they weren’t the only thing that was poor on the night.

According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, Villa Park saw its lowest attendance for three decades as only 11,197 attended the 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.

In fact, attendances were down across the country as this competition fails to appeal to supporters who are already paying out hefty sums for season tickets in the country’s top two divisions. For example, a paltry 6,607 people watched Palace edge past Huddersfield Town, while only 12,740 witnessed Wolves edging past Bristol Rovers in extra time.

Tony Xia will have been alarmed by this meager attendance as large sections of the stadium were as good as empty.

However, despite how few turned up, it still beat the lowest ever attendance of 7,678, which was recorded back in 1985 when Villa took on Exeter in the League Cup.
