- Aston Villa have reportedly reignited their interest in Real Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro
- Emi Martínez looks likely to leave this summer, leaving a huge hole for Villa to fill
- The club has added Remiro to their shortlist alongside several other goalkeepers
Emi Martínez’s future at Aston Villa hangs in the balance as a potential exit looks increasingly likely. Villa have reportedly reactivated their interest in Real Sociedad’s Álex Remiro as a possible replacement for the Argentine. Remiro is one of several names on Villa’s shortlist.
Speculation surrounding the World Cup winner reached a tipping point earlier this week, with reports stating that Martínez has reached an agreement with Juventus over personal terms.
While club-to-club negotiations are yet to formally begin, the Serie A giants have reportedly launched a lowball opening offer of €5m, falling well short of the minimum €15m evaluation set by the Villans.
Because Martínez is currently focused on defending his country’s World Cup title, a definitive resolution is not expected until July. Nevertheless, the Villa Park hierarchy is actively creating contingency plans to avoid a delay in getting a replacement ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Another name added
Rather than halting operations, Villa have added a fresh target to their growing succession list.
According to reports surfaced by Sport Witness, citing Spanish outlets AS and Estadio Deportivo, Villa have reactivated their pursuit of Real Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro. Remiro joins an expansive radar of potential replacements.
Monitored options already include Parma’s Zion Suzuki, Manchester City’s James Trafford, Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, RC Lens’ Robin Risser and Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin.
This is not the club’s first look at the 31-year-old Spaniard. Remiro was identified as a top target last summer when Martínez initially weighed up a move away, though the transfer was shelved when the current No 1 chose to stay. Unai Emery’s appreciation for his compatriot remains incredibly strong.
Bargain price
The financial dynamics surrounding the Real Sociedad stopper make him an incredibly attractive option on the market.
Remiro’s current contract runs until 2027. However, reports out of Spain note that the La Liga side are open to sanctioning a sale this summer and are requesting a bargain fee of just €8-10 million (£6.8-8.5 million).
This represents an immense drop from his previous €50 million release clause. At this price point, Remiro stands out as a highly cost-effective piece of transfer business compared to alternative options. During his most recent club campaign, Remiro made 39 appearances for La Real.

While Remiro’s €8-10 million price tag makes him a highly tempting market bargain, the club would be much better suited targeting a younger alternative for their long-term project.
Replacing a monumental figure like Martínez requires a goalkeeper who can anchor the position for the next decade, rather than a short-term fix.
Opting for a developmental talent with specific traits, such as 23-year-old Suzuki or Manchester City’s Trafford, aligns perfectly with the club’s strategy under the current regime.
Investing in youth gives Emery a mouldable asset with high future resale value and ensures the club’s defensive spine remains solid for years to come.
