Aston Villa are interested in signing Barnsley defender Liam Lindsay in the summer, according to a report in the Birmingham Mail.
The 23-year-old has been a critical figure in the League One side’s back four this year, and the South Yorkshire outfit can thank the central defender for occupying an automatic promotion spot.
Consequently, the Scotsman has caught the eye of various managers in leagues above – including Dean Smith.
The former Brentford boss is eager to put his stamp on the Villa squad after arriving partway through the season, and the arrival of Lindsay could go someway to creating a team in his image.
A Glasgow-native, the centre back started his career at Partick Thistle, eventually getting a move to English football in 2017, joining Barnsley.

Playing a huge part in the Tykes’ last campaign, Lindsay was unable to prevent relegation to League One.
Nevertheless, his bounceback season in the division below has drawn considerable attention, and we understand that Villa would love to sign him in the summer.
