Villa’s attempt to capture Mike van der Hoorn on a free transfer could be scuppered by Swansea, according to a report by Wales Online.
The outlet claims that Graham Potter’s side could exercise a one-year extension built into the 26-year old’s contract. A senior player at the Liberty Stadium, the vice-captain is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, and there is no indication that he is ready to put pen to paper on a new deal any time soon.
Dean Smith’s side had come close to making a move for the former Ajax man in January, but decided the £10 million fee demanded by the Welsh outfit was too rich for their blood, instead preferring to wait and see if they could land him on a free in the summer.

If Swansea do decide to trigger the extension in Van der Hoorn’s contract, then the Midlanders will be forced to look elsewhere to find new defenders.
Having made 40 appearances in all competitions this year for Swansea, it is easy to imagine Potter would be keen to lock the centre-half down for another season.
