Aston Villa have released eight players following their promotion to the Premier League.
Dean Smith’s side saw off Derby County with a 2-1 victory in the Championship play-off final on Monday, to return to the top flight for the first time since being relegated in 2016.
And Villa look set for a busy summer after announcing their decision to release eight players this summer in a short statement on the club’s official website.
Aston Villa has today released eight players. They are Mile Jedinak, Alan Hutton, Tommy Elphick, Albert Adomah, Glenn Whelan, Ritchie De Laet, Mark Bunn and Micah Richards. We’d like to thank all of them for their contributions and wish them the best of luck for the future.

Smith reportedly met with Villa’s sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch earlier this week to discuss the respective futures of those who are out of contract this summer.
While the release of Micah Richards will come as no surprise, with the defender’s last competitive appearance for Villa coming in October 2016, a few eyebrows may be raised over the decision to release the likes of Whelan.
