Aston Villa have been handed a potential boost as one of their reported targets, Alex McCarthy, has been made available for a transfer by Southampton.
As reported by Sky Sports, Saints are looking to go into the new season with Angus Gunn as their first-choice goalkeeper and as such, they’re looking to offload currently second-choice McCarthy and third-choice Fraser Forster.

Both Forster and McCarthy are two of Saints’ highest earners and the duo are both under contract until 2022, so the Premier League side are keen to get them off the wage bill, which could mean they’re available for a discount fee.
Dean Smith seems keen to bring in a goalkeeper this summer and ideally, he’ll be looking for one with Premier League pedigree. McCarthy fits that bill having played top-flight football for QPR, Crystal Palace and Southampton.
McCarthy has also been linked with a move to Liverpool but with Simon Mignolet now expected to remain at Anfield, Villa could have a clear run at him.
