Former Aston Villa player Darren Bent has told Football Insider that the Villains have made the wrong decision to let former teammate Alan Hutton leave the club.
Bent who played alongside Hutton at Villa Park from 2011-2015 told Football Insider:
That the Scottish international is a valuable player in the dressing room and with his experience of service could have been proven useful on their return to the Premier League.
The Villains confirmed at the start of June on their website that Hutton was one of eight senior players leaving at the end of their contracts.
But Bent thinks that Dean Smith, the Head Coach of Villa, could have made a costly error by letting Hutton go on a free transfer as Bent believes that the Scottish full-back could have offered something to Smith’s team even if it was not regular football this season.
Bent said to Football Insider:
I would have loved them to keep Alan Hutton as he was there when I was there he was a real fans’ favorite, knew the club inside and out, die-hard, loved it there and I would have loved to see them keep him there but it was obviously not meant to be. You can understand why but you also can’t. I get the youth but you need experience and Alan Hutton has been there, done that. He’s played in the Premier League for a lot of years, played against big clubs, played for big clubs.
Hutton who appeared 33 times for the club last season made 202 appearances in all competitions over his eight years at the Birmingham Club.
Bent went on to end the interview by stating:
I just think even if he’s not going to start you need these type of players in the dressing room. He’s not a bad egg, he’s professional, does everything right. You need a couple of them in the building.”
A player with Hutton’s experience of Premier Leauge football would have helped them out this season as he has played in the league before with both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
