Former England defender Danny Mills has called on Aston Villa to offer John McGinn a new contract.
The Scottish midfielder arrived at Villa Park back in 2018 from Scottish Premiership side Hibernian and his efforts for Dean Smith’s side helped them gain promotion to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old notched up 10 assists and six goals during the 2018/19 promotion-winning season and his performances continued in the same vein last season, netting three goals in the Premier League.
McGinn, who signed a new contract at Villa back in August 2019, is now subject of a plea from former Leeds defender Mills, who claims the midfielder should be on the same terms as the likes of Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings and Keinan Davis.
The three aforementioned players have all been offered fresh terms of late and Mills spoke with Football Insider about a potential new deal for McGinn, saying:
“McGinn is a top-class player and if you do not reward players in this day and age and they get within two years of their contract they start thinking, ‘Maybe I am not wanted and I will walk away and leave.’
“He is undoubtedly a fantastic player and you have to tie down your assets so at least then if they are to be sold you can get good money for them.”
Villa have lost their last two games in the Premier League and McGinn found himself the subject of some fan critique following the defeat to Southampton at the weekend.
Smith’s side will face Arsenal next as they look to bounce back from the recent couple of defeats.

A new contract for McGinn does not seem like a priority for Villa at the moment.
The Scottish midfielder is seemingly happy at Villa, signing a new five-year deal until 2024, and there have been no real signs over the last few months to suggest that he could move on.
For now, off-field matters must be put on a backburner as Villa look to get back to winning ways. It is so far so good for Villa and McGinn continues to be a big part of that.
