Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that a new contract for John McGinn will be the club’s next ‘major’ deal.
The Scottish midfielder joined the Midlands club in 2018 from Hibernian and his impressive form for Dean Smith’s side saw him play a large part in promotion to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old notched an impressive 10 assists and six goals during the 2018/19 promotion-winning season and he followed that with three goals and three assists in England’s top flight last term.
Having only recently signed a new contract at Villa back in August 2019, the midfield ace is being tipped by many to follow in the footsteps of Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings and Keinan Davis in agreeing fresh and improved terms.
Agbonlahor is the latest figure to discuss a potential new deal for McGinn, predicting that a new contract for the Scottish international is on the cards.
“Yeah, hundred percent. I think that’ll be done and dusted in due course,” the former Villa striker told Football Insider when asked whether or not McGinn was next in line for a new contract.
“Even on Sunday, when it wasn’t going as well for Aston Villa in the first half, he was never hiding, he was getting on the ball, he was driving the team on.
“He’s like that unsung hero, John McGinn, doesn’t get enough praise for what he actually does.
“Watching live on Sunday, I noticed the way like he’s just everywhere – buying fouls, taking quick free kicks.
“He just wants to get the team on and he’s very talkative, which I didn’t think he was but he was watching live. A great player and someone that Villa need to tie up.”

With Villa having started the season in fine form, a new contract at this present time for McGinn hardly an urgent priority. The Scottish midfielder is seemingly happy at Villa, penning that new five-year deal in August until 2024.
With seemingly little interest from elsewhere in McGinn, Villa can rest easy for the time being over that so-called ‘major’ deal. The focus for now should be primarily on the Premier League and getting back to winning ways.
