Aston Villa striker Wesley has been sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury since January but is on the recovery trail.
The club posted a video on Twitter showing the 23-year-old building up his fitness on the training ground, but manager Dean Smith isn’t getting carried away.
This week, he told Birmingham Live: “Wesley is starting to do some ball work and build up his strength.”
It has already been 11 months since his last appearance in a Villa shirt, but Birmingham Live claimed that Wesley will not be available for selection until March, so fans may not see much of the £22m man this season.

Wesley joined from Club Brugge in 2019 and has gone on to make 22 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying one assist. The Brazilian’s only outing in 2020 came in Villa’s 2-1 win over Burnley on New Year’s Day and resulted in him picking up that serious knee injury, so he’s going to be very short of match fitness when he eventually returns.
In Wesley’s absence, Smith has Ollie Watkins, Bertrand Traore and Keinan Davis at his disposal, so at least there are plenty of options for the Aston Villa manager while he waits for the Brazilian to make his long-awaited return.
In other news, Aston Villa have named their asking price for this in-demand star.
