Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Matias Vecino, but it remains to be seen whether he’d make the switch from Inter Milan as he has been sidelined with a knee injury for most of the season.
The 29-year-old had surgery in July and was still recovering last month, so he has yet to make an appearance in any competition this term.
Dean Smith isn’t short on options in the engine room, but Ross Barkley is currently out with a hamstring injury, Henri Lansbury was left out of the Premier League squad and is surplus to requirements, Marvelous Nakamba has struggled for playing time and Conor Hourihane isn’t commanding a starting place, so a new addition may be required.
If Villa really are interested in signing Vecino, they have now been given a major boost by Sport Mediaset’s report. The Uruguay international is ‘available’ this month and may be granted a departure if his asking price is met, but his stock won’t be high given his lack of activity.

Villa need a player who can make an instant impact for the second half of the season, so it may be a needless gamble bringing a midfielder who is considerably short of fitness. That didn’t work with Danny Drinkwater in January 2020 and it likely won’t work with Vecino either.
His last appearance for Inter came in July and he has only featured twice for the Nerazzurri since March, so Smith may be better off turning his attentions elsewhere.
