England lost to Italy on penalties in the final of the 2020 European Championships and many pundits were critical of the decision to allow Buyako Saka to take the final spot-kick.
Roy Keane was one of many who criticised England’s more senior players like Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish for not stepping up, but Grealish responded on Twitter.
It was surprising that 19-year-old Saka was taking the fifth penalty England needed to score to remain in the shootout when so many more experienced players were available.
Harry Kane and Harry Maguire scored with their spot-kicks while Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford missed, so Saka was left with all the pressure on his young shoulders.
But it appears Grealish was happy to shoulder the responsibility, only for Gareth Southgate to make the final decision on his takers. Ultimately, it didn’t pan out and England had to make do with a runners-up medal.
Keane may be forced into retracting his criticism or apologising for his remarks, as he’s unfairly singled out players that put their names forward for a penalty.
