Aston Villa have strengthened their squad with the signings of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City and Ashley Young from Inter Milan this summer, but they’re expected to bring in more new faces before the transfer window shuts.
One player who could be on his way to the Midlands is Leon Bailey, after Fabrizio Romano said on his Twitch channel that Villa are trying to sign the Bayer Leverkusen forward. The news was received positively on social media by some until Romano claimed he could be Jack Grealish’s replacement.
The 23-year-old is coming off the back of a prolific season in Germany that saw him score nine goals and make nine assists in 30 Bundesliga games. Bailey created 48 chances, had 74 successful dribbles and whipped in 154 crosses, so it’s easy to see why Villa are keen.
Supporters would love to have Bailey and Grealish in the same team, but Romano’s comments suggest it will be only one or the other. With Buendia, Bertrand Traore, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet to call upon, Dean Smith isn’t light in attack. Bailey would be a big statement of intent, however.
