Gregg Evans of The Athletic has given an update on Aston Villa’s hunt for a centre-back, revealing the Midlands outfit are ‘unlikely’ to add to their backline this summer.
Steven Gerrard will go into next season with Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos, Calum Chambers and Kortney Hause at his disposal, so it’s hard to see Mings being sold now.
The 29-year-old had an uncertain future this summer as his form was inconsistent over the season, he was recently left out of the England squad and Villa were being linked with centre-backs.
Despite having four defenders on the books at the time, Boubacar Kamara was signed from Olympique Marseille and Carlos was signed from Sevilla, so Mings’ starting place looked in doubt.
Villa were briefly linked with Burnley’s James Tarkowski too, so it did appear Gerrard was considering replacing his captain. But Read Aston Villa spoke about the odds of Mings leaving and how hard it is to find a greater alternative, so it’s not a surprise he’ll stay.
Mings does need to improve from last season as Villa lost more games and conceded more goals than the previous campaign, but he’s not the only one who’s dipped since 2021.
