Aston Villa have Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Calum Chambers in defence, but John Percy of the Telegraph says the Midlands outfit are interested in James Tarkowski. The 29-year-old is out of contract this summer and isn’t close to putting pen to paper on an extension, so he might be available on a free transfer.

Burnley are embroiled in a relegation battle, so Tarkowski might jump at the chance to sign for Villa if an official offer comes his way. Steven Gerrard will have to make room for the England international and may do so by selling Hause. The 26-year-old is surplus to requirements after spending the season on the periphery, so his exit would open the door for Tarkowski.

He’s a player Villa should consider signing too, as he boasts the most shots blocked in the Premier League (61), most clearances made (179) and most aerial duels won (147). And with Tarkowski averaging a tackle (62) or interception (49) every 27 minutes, Gerrard shouldn’t ignore him.

Tarkowski would be an upgrade on Hause and would put pressure on Mings and Konsa for a starting place. Plus, he won’t break the bank as a free transfer, so he’s well worth signing.
