Aston Villa may not sign another defensive-midfielder, but Steven Gerrard is reportedly keen on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to add goals and assists to the side – a decision Read Aston Villa have criticised before.
The 28-year-old has an uncertain future at Liverpool after struggling for playing time this season, falling down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp and being out of contract in 2023, so a move away from Anfield looks on the cards.
Villa want to capitalise on the situation and Noel Whelan supports the decision, telling Football Insider: “Oxlade-Chamberlain can also play out wide and provide another option in those positions. Gerrard knows what he can get out of him. He would be a really good asset on the training ground as well.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain isn’t a bad player, but he’s not shown his true quality for many years. The 28-year-old, who hasn’t represented England since 2019, has scored just 17 goals with 15 assists from 133 games at Liverpool (2017 – present).
Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t bagged more than four Premier League goals in a season since making the switch from Arsenal either, so is he really the player to bring goals to the Villa squad?
The Englishman has had injury problems for years too, amassing 1031 minutes of league football in the last two seasons, so there are many reasons why Gerrard should avoid him.
In other news, Steven Gerrard has little choice but to keep Danny Ings at Aston Villa
