Why Aston Villa shouldn’t sign Oxlade-Chamberlain
Despite having Philippe Coutinho, Emi Buendia and Jacob Ramsey at his disposal, Football Insider say Steven Gerrard wants to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to play in an attacking role to contribute with goals.
The 28-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool and is out of contract in 2023 without a new deal on the horizon, so the Reds are willing to sell him for £10m this summer.
Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool from Arsenal in 2017 and has gone on to make 133 appearances in all competitions, scoring 17 goals with 15 assists. The £120k-per-week England international no longer commands a regular place in Jurgen Klopp’s XI, however, with nine Premier League starts this season, so a move away might benefit all parties.
But whether Oxlade-Chamberlain is worth signing to provide goals and assists remains to be seen with the 28-year-old scoring just 10 goals with 10 assists from 94 league games in a Liverpool shirt. He’s had a hand in only five goals since 2020, so why would Gerrard sign him?
Ramsey (6), Coutinho (5) and Buendia (4) have more league goals this season than Oxlade-Chamberlain (3) managed in the last two, so he wouldn’t improve the squad.
