Diego Carlos joined Aston Villa from Sevilla in June, agreeing a four-year deal and setting the Midlands outfit back £26m, so it’s expected that he’ll be a regular next season. Gabriel Agbonlahor said the 29-year-old’s arrival is bad news for Kortney Hause, but he also believes Ezri Konsa will be a casualty from the side due to Carlos.
The 24-year-old was outstanding in 2020/21 and was being considered for an England call-up, but his stock has fallen after a disappointing 2021/22 campaign. Konsa picked up a knee injury at the end of the season and was ruled out until September, so Agbonlahor predicts Carlos will be given the nod in his absence.
He told Football Insider: “You’ve got Carlos and (Tyrone) Mings who, for me, will be the first choice (next season) as one left-footer and one right-footer for Steven Gerrard. Then you’ve got Konsa who is going to be coming back from an injury.”
Gerrard also has Calum Chambers at his disposal, but it’s unlikely he’ll hold down a starting place. The fact Villa felt they needed Carlos this summer suggests Chambers doesn’t have his manager’s trust. And Konsa won’t be fit enough to be in contention, missing an entire pre-season and first few games of the new campaign.
