Unai Emery doesn’t just chase history. He makes it. Last week in France, the Spaniard became only the fifth manager in Aston Villa’s entire history to reach 100 wins, doing so in just 181 games, faster than any of his predecessors. That milestone arrived at the perfect moment, too, as Ollie Watkins’ second-half header sealed a 1-0 first-leg victory over Lille. Now, Emery sets his sights on something even bigger. The four-time Europa League winner has never lost a last-16 tie in this competition, and he has absolutely no intention of starting now. Thursday night at Villa Park is his stage and he knows exactly how to perform on it. Do you back him to deliver again?
Home sweet home? Villa’s form raises real questions
Villa Park has been a fortress in Europe this season: four home games, four wins, eight goals scored, three conceded. That record is impressive, and the atmosphere on European nights under the lights is something else entirely. However, there is a concern worth addressing head-on. Since beating Red Bull Salzburg in November, Villa have won just one of their last five home fixtures across all competitions, shipping nine goals in the process. That’s a worry Emery cannot afford to ignore. Add in injury doubts over Emiliano Buendia and the absence of key men Tielemans and Kamara, and the margin for error shrinks considerably. Villa must rediscover that early-season home swagger and fast.
Lille aren’t done yet. Expect a fight tonight
Don’t expect Lille to simply roll over. Bruno Genesio’s side arrive at Villa Park having already overturned a one-goal deficit this season coming from behind to eliminate Red Star Belgrade on aggregate. They also head into this tie on the back of a 2-1 away win at Rennes, showing they carry a real threat on the road. And then there’s Olivier Giroud, 39 yo, nine goals this season, and a man who has won this very competition before. Lille have never reached a Europa League quarter-final, and that hunger could make them dangerous. Villa have the experience, the manager, and the crowd behind them, but they will need to bring their best to finish this tie off. What do you think does Villa Park deliver on tonight?
Kick-off is at 8:00 PM GMT. Up the Villa. 🦁
