While the majority of Villa fans will be proud to see so many of their stars representing their nations, one particular call-up has raised genuine concern and it involves a player only just returning from a lengthy injury absence.

World Cup glory, prestige friendlies and an emerging group of stars
Consequently, this international break carries far more weight than a standard set of friendlies. For three Villa players specifically, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Victor Lindelöf’s Sweden face Ukraine in Valencia in a World Cup playoff semi-final on Thursday evening, with a place at this summer’s tournament in North America on the line.
Similarly, Matty Cash’s Poland host Albania in Warsaw in the same competition, in what promises to be a ferocious encounter in front of a packed home crowd.
Meanwhile, Leon Bailey’s Jamaica travel to Guadalajara to face New Caledonia in the early hours of Thursday morning, a result that could send the Reggae Boyz to their first ever World Cup.
Three Villa players. Three genuinely massive occasions. For each of them, winning on Thursday changes everything.
Elsewhere, John McGinn leads Scotland into a blockbuster home friendly against Japan at Hampden Park on Saturday evening, while Emi Martinez faces arguably the most glamorous friendly of the entire window: Argentina taking on Spain, two of the pre-tournament favourites for World Cup glory.
For Lucas Digne, meanwhile, a trip to the United States awaits as France go toe-to-toe with Brazil; quite simply, one of the standout fixtures of the entire international break. Amadou Onana and Lamare Bogarde, moreover, both face two-game schedules for Belgium and the Netherlands respectively, as both nations continue their World Cup preparations.
Finally, Ezri Konsa and Morgan Rogers carry the Villa flag for England, with Thomas Tuchel’s side facing Uruguay and Japan in two high-profile Wembley friendlies. With the World Cup just around the corner, every minute on the pitch matters.
The Tielemans question: is this call-up too soon?
However, one name on the Belgium squad list has understandably set nerves jangling among Villa fans this week. Youri Tielemans, who has only recently returned to training after a lengthy knee injury that kept him sidelined for over two months, he has been included in the Belgium squad for both games against the USA and Mexico.
On one hand, his inclusion reflects the enormous regard in which the Belgian coaching staff hold the midfielder and, indeed, his importance to Villa’s own Champions League ambitions. On the other hand, it raises an entirely legitimate question: is this too soon?
Villa fans will be acutely aware of how much they missed Tielemans during his absence. His return to full fitness is genuinely one of the most exciting developments of the second half of Villa’s season, particularly with the Europa League quarter-final against Bologna fast approaching.
Therefore, the prospect of Tielemans picking up a recurrence or a new problem during international duty (before that quarter-final, before the decisive end of the season) will be a nagging concern for Emery and the Villa faithful alike.
Belgium will, of course, manage him carefully. However, managing him carefully and keeping him completely protected are two very different things. Villa fans will be watching those two games with one eye on the scoreline and one eye firmly on number 8. Get through unscathed, Youri.
