Report: Aston Villa make formal move for Waldemar Anton amid Dortmund contract tension

Aston Villa have officially signaled their intent to bolster Unai Emery’s defensive options for the 2026/27 campaign by launching an approach for Borussia Dortmund standout Waldemar Anton.

The 29-year-old German international has emerged as one of the most consistent performers in the Bundesliga this season, sparking a high-stakes transfer battle involving some of Europe’s heavyweights

Since his move to Signal Iduna Park in 2024, Anton has established himself as the “iron fist” of the Dortmund backline.

With 25 Bundesliga appearances and 11 clean sheets to his name this term, his leadership and tactical discipline have made him a primary target for Emery, who is keen to add more physical presence to his defence.

Villa’s interest comes at a time when the club is looking to solidify its status among England’s elite. Reports suggest that a fee in the region of €35m–€40m (£30m–£34m) could be enough to tempt Dortmund into a sale, despite the German giants being desperate to retain their star man.

While Aston Villa have made a formal approach, they are far from alone in the race.

Sky Sports Germany has reported that Manchester United and Atletico Madrid have also made inquiries about his current situation.

The 29-year-old’s current contract runs until 2028; however, plans to discuss his future will take place soon. Anton could sign a new deal on improved terms, with Dortmund wanting to keep the player, but should those talks break down, then he could become available.

Speaking about his future, Anton said, “Whether there are rumours or not, I don’t even notice them. To be honest, I’m not interested. It doesn’t matter if it’s about me or anyone else. There’s always a lot of speculation in football.”

He has expressed his desire to win titles, and by entering the latter stages of his career, it could sway his decision to remain in Germany. “A club like Borussia Dortmund wants and should be competing for titles. I’m very keen to do that.”

Leader, experienced and key player

The centre-back is the defensive leader among Dortmund’s back line. He’s been a key player since he joined them in July 2024 from VfB Stuttgart. The deal was worth €22.5 million (£19.6 million). To date, he has made over 350 appearances in his career, providing him with ample experience.

Anton has also been capped 12 times for his national team and was recently called up for the last set of international fixtures before the World Cup in the summer.

Does he suit Villa?

Given his age and current profile, he certainly isn’t a player for the future. However, Unai Emery likes signing players for the here and now, as they are already at the level required to compete on all fronts.

With the possibility of returning to the Champions League next season, Anton would be a good addition to the dressing room. As a veteran, his knowledge would help the squad deal with the pressures that come with competing in Europe’s elite competition.

Villa’s financial situation does not give them a lot of wiggle room in the transfer market. A one-in-one-out system is how they currently operate, and moving on one of their centre-backs for a decent fee may prove to be difficult.

He won’t come cheap, as Dortmund is in no hurry to sell. Villa has to start thinking about the future of the squad, so do they have the capacity to afford a seasoned player like Anton and a young, talented deputy?
