Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom has confirmed multiple clubs are already interested in signing Aston Villa’s Lewis Dobbin this summer.
- Dobbin has recorded 16 goal contributions in 37 Championship appearances this season
- Heckingbottom revealed he personally watched the winger extensively before convincing him to play centrally
- The Villa loanee insists his long-term ambition remains to play for the Midlands club
- A permanent sale or another loan are both being considered for the 23-year-old
Heckingbottom’s verdict: a player who has transformed
Paul Heckingbottom did not hold back when assessing Dobbin’s contribution at Deepdale this season.
The Preston manager revealed the careful planning behind deploying the Villa loanee in a central attacking role a positional shift that has proven genuinely transformative for both player and club.
“I watched a lot more of him and spoke to Dobbo about playing inside the pitch as one of the tens, rather than wide,” Heckingbottom explained.
“He’s not starved of the ball, he will run and press. He knows I’m not going to have a go at him when he gives the ball away. I feel the more we can encourage him to get on the ball and be positive, the more havoc he can cause.“
The numbers: a career-best return
The statistics from Deepdale this season represent by far the most productive spell of Dobbin’s professional career.
Sixteen goal contributions across 37 Championship appearances (including nine goals across all competitions) tell the story of a player who has finally found the consistent platform and positional freedom his development demanded.
Furthermore, his partnership with Tottenham loanee Alfie Devine has been one of the Championship’s most enjoyable attacking relationships this season: the pair developing an almost instinctive understanding that has contributed directly to Dobbin’s output.
That chemistry, built across a full season of consistent selection, has given the 23-year-old exactly the rhythm his career previously lacked.
Summer interest already building
Heckingbottom confirmed publicly that the growing list of interested clubs is already a reality.
“Yeah, there is,” the Preston boss said when asked whether he anticipates significant summer interest. His assessment of Dobbin’s irreplaceable contribution was equally telling. “You want all 11 players to be like that. That’s the aim. That’s everything.“
It is expected that Dobbin will either head out on loan again or leave permanently if Villa receive a suitable offer. The 23-year-old remains contracted at Villa Park until 2028 — giving the Midlands club complete control over any potential transaction.
Dobbin’s own ambition: Villa remains the dream
Despite the external interest, Dobbin has been characteristically clear about where his heart lies.
“I’m contracted to Villa. I went there with the aspirations to play for Villa, that’s always my goal, that’s always the long-term goal,” he told the Lancashire Post.
“Hopefully, I get the chance one day, but if not, it’s not the end of the world. I’ll back myself to have a good move if I was to leave Villa.“
Villa face a decision: loan, sell or promote?
Sixteen goal contributions. A transformed positional profile.
Championship clubs queuing up. Emery must now decide whether Dobbin has done enough to earn a genuine first-team opportunity at Villa Park, or whether another loan represents the more prudent path.
Either way, the 23-year-old returns from Preston a considerably more complete and confident player than when he left.
