Aston Villa are reportedly among the clubs monitoring Johan Manzambi’s situation as Newcastle United attempt to complete a deal for the Freiburg midfielder.
Newcastle have agreed a package worth around £51million with the Bundesliga club, but the transfer has not yet been formally completed.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the decision remains with Manzambi, leaving Villa and other interested sides with a narrow opportunity to intervene.
However, the latest indications suggest Newcastle are in a strong position. Romano has since reported that they are closing in on the Switzerland international after reaching an agreement worth around €60m with Freiburg.
The Guardian also reports that Newcastle have agreed a £51.5m deal, with the move expected to progress once Manzambi’s World Cup campaign is over.
Manzambi interest reflects Villa’s midfield urgency
Villa’s interest comes at a time when Unai Emery needs greater midfield depth for another Champions League campaign.
Amadou Onana’s serious knee injury has increased the need for another athletic central option, while Villa also face decisions over the wider balance of the squad.
Manzambi would fit the profile. The 20-year-old can operate centrally or in a more advanced role and has enhanced his reputation through his performances for Switzerland at the World Cup.
His age, versatility and Bundesliga experience would also make him a strong long-term investment rather than a short-term replacement.
Villa have already explored other midfield options. ReadAstonVilla recently covered the increased urgency behind their pursuit of Arthur Atta following Onana’s injury.
A move for Manzambi would require Villa to act quickly and convince the player to turn away from an advanced Newcastle agreement.
Newcastle remain favourites to complete the signing. Villa’s presence, though, shows Emery and the recruitment team are actively assessing high-level midfield additions before the new season.
