Aston Villa’s Under-21s have been eliminated from the PL2 knockout stage after a brave 3-2 defeat to Manchester City at Bodymoor Heath.
- Bradley Burrowes gave Villa a dream start inside two minutes — but City levelled almost instantly
- Luka Lynch’s brilliant second-half finish briefly restored Villa’s advantage
- Floyd Samba and Kaden Braithwaite turned the tie in City’s favour in the second half
- Villa finish an impressive campaign having reached the quarter-finals from 11th in the regular season
A dream start. Then a frenetic opening
Jimmy Shan’s Young Lions could not have asked for a better beginning. Inside two minutes, George Hemmings drove forward and found space in behind City’s defensive line.
Spike Brits saved the initial effort, but captain Bradley Burrowes followed in emphatically to give Villa the most electric of starts at Bodymoor Heath.
The dream opening lasted precisely three minutes. Mahamadou Sangaré met Floyd Samba’s pinpoint delivery at the back post and crashed a powerful header past Sam Proctor to restore parity.
What followed was one of the most frenetic opening quarters imaginable: end-to-end football, three bookings, and a series of chances at both ends that left supporters breathless.
Max Jenner went close twice for Villa, while Proctor produced an alert save to claw away Samba’s effort trickling toward the corner. The first half ended level and entirely deserved so.
Lynch’s brilliance. Villa retake the lead
The second half began with immediate and emphatic intent from Shan’s side.
Just two minutes after the restart, Hemmings strode forward again and fed Luka Lynch, who delivered a brilliant first-time finish into the top corner to put Villa back in front.
It was a goal of genuine quality that temporarily suggested the Young Lions might pull off a significant upset against the reigning PL2 champions.
However, City grew considerably stronger as the half progressed.
On the hour mark, Samba calmly stroked into the bottom corner after Sangaré’s intelligent assist to level for a second time.
The momentum had shifted decisively and with 25 minutes remaining, Kaden Braithwaite converted a controlled volley off the foot of the near post from Charlie Gray’s sumptuous delivery to put the visitors ahead for the first time.
Villa fight to the end, but City hold on
Shan’s side refused to capitulate. Trai-Varn Mulley delivered a teasing ball for Burrowes after coming off the bench, but the captain could not find the finish.
Brits produced a brilliant late save to deny Burrowes again in the closing stages as Villa pushed desperately for an equaliser.
Sam Proctor headed the ball inches over Man City bar in a desperate attempt to get the equaliser after a Villa corner kick.
Eight minutes of added time provided further opportunity, but a strong City side held firm to advance.

A season to be proud of
Villa finished 11th in the regular PL2 season. They reached the quarter-finals of the knockout stage, defeating a Southampton side that reached last year’s final along the way.
The Young Lions showed character, resilience, and genuine quality throughout a campaign that will have provided invaluable developmental experience for every player involved.
The season is over for the Under-21s, but the foundation built under Jimmy Shan this campaign is one the club can build upon with genuine confidence next season
