- Galatasaray are said to be targeting Aston Villa’s Emi Buendía this summer
- The Argentinian is “at the top of their shortlist for the playmaker position”
- Villa’s willingness to let him go remains unclear
Galatasaray have set their sights on Aston Villa’s Emi Buendía this summer, as they look to bolster their creative department. He is reportedly “at the top of their shortlist for the playmaker position” with the Turkish club closely monitoring his situation at Villa Park.
Although Unai Emery was happy for him to leave last year, Buendía decided to stay and fight for his place in the team. After the team had a dreadful start to the season, the 29-year-old was a bright light that slowly became a valuable player.
More recently, he played a key role in Villa’s 4-0 hammering of Nottingham Forest. They managed to overturn a one-goal deficit in the Europa League semi-final first leg, to book their place in Istanbul on the 20th May.
He’s made 51 appearances in all competitions, scored ten goals and provided eight assists. Whilst that has been impressive, it’s his defensive work rate that has really stood out.
It’s a testament to his character that no matter his performance, he will always leave everything out on the pitch and try to spark energy into the rest of the team.
As the summer approaches, the club must decide whether he should stay or depart. Villa’s need to bring in younger players and reduce their wage bill may force the latter.
Galatasaray emerge as a destination
According to Turkish Football, Okan Buruk’s side are prioritising the signing of a “high-calibre creative engine” this summer. This moves Buendía into the frame, with his ability to operate as a central No 10 and creative winger, offering exactly what Galatasaray needs.
Officials expect to hold talks in the coming weeks, with the Turkish club supposedly preparing a loan deal with an option to buy. They are hoping to use the lure of the Champions League and the chance to be a vital player in a title-chasing side to convince Buendía to make the switch.

The position for Villa couldn’t be simpler. Now seems the perfect time to cash in on Buendía, due to his performances this season, driving his value up.
Whilst he has been effective at times, there are better creative players out there who could improve the quality of the team. If they secure Champions League football, they will be able to attract those elite players, enabling them to continue to be a consistent qualifier for Europe’s elite competition.
