- Tammy Abraham has revealed he underwent shoulder surgery, after he posted an Instagram story on his social media
- His injury could be linked to the 93rd minute winner he scored against Sunderland in April
- It comes as a bit of a shock for Villa supporters due to the lack of any reports regarding an injury or the need for surgery
Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham has revealed he has undergone successful surgery on his shoulder, suggesting he played through the injury to aid Villa’s success this season.
Since the beginning of May, Abraham has only played 60 minutes in all competitions. This was in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League.
The lack of substitute appearances confused supporters, despite Unai Emery naming Abraham on the bench for all remaining games. Evidently, this shoulder injury that required surgery may have been the reason for the reduced minutes.
The Englishman shared an update from his hospital bed via an Instagram story he posted, providing supporters with an initial shock, given the lack of any reports regarding the need for surgery.
Supporters can trace the story behind the operation directly back to April 19th 2026, during an astonishing 4-3 Premier League thriller against Sunderland at Villa Park.
Villa had seemingly thrown away a comfortable 3-1 lead, conceding two goals in less than a minute to leave the home crowd stunned.
Introduced as a substitute, Abraham became the savior. In the 93rd minute, he connected with a pinpoint cross from Lucas Digne, slotting home a dramatic, late winning goal. The stadium erupted into chaotic celebration, but it became quickly apparent that something was wrong with the 28-year-old.
Pain in the celebration
As the rest of the Villa squad mobbed the striker in front of the Holte End, Abraham’s immediate reaction was a mix of intense relief and physical agony. Instead of an open-armed celebration, he instinctively grimaced, tightly clutching his right shoulder.
Though media reports at the time suggested a minor tweak, his Instagram story confirmed that the damage was far more severe.

Supporters on social media quickly connected the dots, realising that the forward had knowingly risked further damage to stay available for Unai Emery’s side down the final stretch of the season.
By choosing to delay the procedure, Abraham prioritised Villa’s successful push toward elite European qualification and a Europa League trophy. Now, with the season finished, he can finally be on the road to recovery.
