Aston Villa have been handed a useful Emi Martinez transfer twist after Guglielmo Vicario reportedly returned to Juventus’ goalkeeper shortlist.
Sky Sports’ Aston Villa transfer live blog relayed an update from Sky in Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio on Wednesday, reporting that Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario is back under consideration at Juventus.
That matters for Villa because Martinez has been repeatedly linked with the Serie A giants this summer. Previous reports have suggested Juventus were assessing both Martinez and Vicario as possible goalkeeping options.
For now, there is no official confirmation of a Juventus bid being accepted, no Villa statement, and no public sign that Martinez is forcing the issue.
Villa Gain Breathing Room Over Martinez
Vicario’s name coming back into the Juventus conversation does not end the Martinez speculation. It does, however, slightly change the feel of the market.
Villa are not short of leverage. Martinez remains under contract, is one of Unai Emery’s most important players, and has been central to the club’s rise under the Spaniard.
ReadAstonVilla has already looked at why James Trafford would represent a different kind of Martinez succession plan, but succession planning is not the same as panic.
If Juventus move elsewhere, Villa keep an elite goalkeeper and continue their summer with clarity. If they return for Martinez, the deal must work on Villa’s terms.
This latest twist gives Villa a little more room to breathe.
