Aston Villa have already created a meaningful summer transfer cushion after Donyell Malen’s permanent move to Roma became the headline outgoing in an early window shaped by financial discipline.
Roma confirmed on May 26 that Malen had completed a permanent switch and signed a contract until June 2030, after producing 15 goals in 20 appearances following his January loan. The wider Villa ledger is now sharper still, with Sports Mole listing Malen at £21.6m to Roma and Enzo Barrenechea at £10.3m to Benfica.
Aston Villa can confirm that Donyell Malen has joined Roma for an undisclosed fee.

Unai Emery Gets Early Flexibility Before Villa Spend Again
That gives Villa a reported £31.9m of outgoing income against only £4m of summer spending, a useful position before Unai Emery and Roberto Olabe move deeper into the market.
The significance is not simply cash in the bank. Villa’s recent recruitment has been conditioned by Premier League PSR and UEFA squad-cost pressure, making profitable exits as important as headline arrivals. Malen’s rapid Roma success may sting on a sporting level, but the accounting value is obvious.
Barrenechea’s departure adds another layer. A player who never became central to Emery’s first-team plan has still helped Villa turn squad churn into room for manoeuvre.
With Champions League football back at Villa Park, the next question is whether Villa use that breathing space on depth, youth, or one statement addition.
