Aston Villa Target Tottenham Midfielder Lucas Bergvall For Summer Move

Aston Villa have been named among the leading contenders for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall as Unai Emery’s summer midfield picture takes another turn.

Football Insider, via Football365, claims Villa and Nottingham Forest are near the front of the queue for Bergvall, who is understood to be open to a move after becoming uncertain over his place in Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.

The report says Tottenham’s push for new midfield options has left the Sweden international facing a tougher route to regular minutes.

Bergvall remains under contract until 2031, so this is not a simple cut-price opportunity. Football365 previously reported that Tottenham had told the 20-year-old he was not leaving, while talkSPORT has also said Spurs want to keep him despite outside interest.

Why Bergvall Fits Villa’s Transfer Thinking

Villa already have Youri Tielemans, John McGinn, Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara competing for central roles.

That makes the Bergvall link more about long-term squad planning than immediate emergency cover.

He would give Villa another young No.8 profile with running power, technical security and resale value. Those traits fit the kind of player Emery and Villa’s recruitment department have often targeted: young enough to develop, good enough to challenge and valuable enough to protect the balance sheet.

Read Aston Villa has already covered the club’s earlier Bergvall transfer opening. This latest update moves the story from admiration to positioning.

Forest’s presence also changes the race. They have a clearer midfield gap after Elliot Anderson’s move to Manchester City, which could make their need more immediate.

Villa’s appeal would be different. Emery can offer European football, a clear development structure and the chance to grow inside a squad already built around high-level midfield detail.

Tottenham Stance Remains The Obstacle

The biggest issue remains Tottenham’s position.

Bergvall’s contract runs until 2031, and Spurs have little reason to sell unless the player’s concerns become difficult to manage or a major offer arrives.

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has reported that Bergvall has been told he is not leaving Tottenham this summer, despite interest elsewhere. That stance gives Spurs control, but it does not remove the pressure if the midfielder wants a clearer role.

For Villa, patience may be important. This is unlikely to be a deal won quickly unless Tottenham soften.

The smarter play would be to stay close, understand the price and be ready if Spurs move from a firm refusal to a reluctant sale.

Bergvall would not arrive as an automatic starter at Villa Park. He would arrive as a high-upside midfield investment with a pathway into a demanding European calendar.

That is exactly why the situation is worth tracking.
