Emi Martinez will face three Aston Villa team-mates in the World Cup semi-finals after Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1 following extra time.
The Villa goalkeeper completed the full quarter-final in Kansas City as Argentina continued their defence of the trophy.
Alexis Mac Allister gave Lionel Scaloni’s side an early lead before Dan Ndoye equalised during the second half.
Switzerland were later reduced to 10 players when Breel Embolo received a second yellow card. However, Argentina still needed extra time to secure their place in the last four.
Julián Álvarez restored Argentina’s advantage in the 112th minute. Lautaro Martínez then completed the 3-1 victory over Switzerland during stoppage time.
Martínez faces Aston Villa team-mates
Argentina will now meet England in Atlanta on Wednesday, with a place in the World Cup final at stake.
The semi-final could feature four Villa players. Martínez is set to face Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, who all remain part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
Rogers played an important role in England’s quarter-final win over Norway. His extra-time effort led to Jude Bellingham scoring the winning goal.
Martínez has played every minute of Argentina’s tournament so far. He also helped the holders survive a dramatic last-16 victory over Egypt.
Villa supporters are now guaranteed at least one representative in the World Cup final. However, Unai Emery will also be monitoring the workload of four important first-team players as their tournament runs continue.
