Aston Villa have sanctioned a Joe Gauci Lincoln City loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season.
The Australia international will provide competition for established first-choice goalkeeper George Wickens at the Championship club.
Gauci has completed the temporary move after returning to Villa Park following last season’s loan spell with Port Vale.
Lincoln have made clear that the 26-year-old initially arrives as their number two. However, the club expect him to challenge Wickens rather than simply provide emergency cover.
Goalkeeping coach David Preece said Gauci possesses many of the qualities Lincoln require. He also praised the goalkeeper’s ambition and willingness to compete for regular football.
Sporting director Jez George explained that the loan completes Lincoln’s recruitment work in that area of the squad.

Gauci joined Villa from Adelaide United in February 2024 but has found opportunities limited behind Emiliano Martinez.
He made seven appearances during a loan spell with Barnsley before spending the entire 2025/26 campaign at Port Vale. ReadAstonVilla’s final loan round-up noted that Gauci kept 11 clean sheets across 34 League One appearances despite Vale suffering relegation.
The goalkeeper faced Lincoln twice during that campaign, with the eventual League One champions winning both meetings.
Villa previously confirmed Gauci’s season-long Port Vale move after deciding another temporary spell would support his development.
Lincoln now offer a step into the Championship, although regular starts are not guaranteed. Wickens recently signed a new contract and remains their recognised first choice.
Gauci must therefore force his way into the team through his performances in training and any cup opportunities.
The Joe Gauci Lincoln City loan gives Villa another season to assess his progress while keeping him under contract. It also provides Lincoln with experienced competition rather than a goalkeeper content to remain on the bench.
