Ian Maatsen at Aston Villa
Initially, Aston Villa signed Maatsen from Chelsea in the summer of 2024. Meanwhile, the club also recruited Amadou Onana that July. Immediately, Maatsen made his debut against West Ham United. Specifically, he came off the bench on the opening day. Subsequently, he settled in as a left-sided defender.
Furthermore, he scored his first Villa goal against Club Brugge in March 2025. Additionally, he featured in the 2025–26 Europa League campaign. Crucially, Villa beat Freiburg 3–0 in the final. Therefore, he added a European trophy to his Championship title. Ultimately, he has made 61 league appearances for Villa.
Career Before Aston Villa
Previously, Ian Maatsen came through academies at Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven. Subsequently, Chelsea signed him in 2018. Eventually, he made his senior debut in September 2019. However, he managed only 12 league appearances for the London club. Therefore, Chelsea sent him out on repeated loans.
First, he spent the 2020–21 season at Charlton Athletic. Afterwards, he made 40 league appearances for Coventry City. Crucially, he then won the 2023 Championship title with Burnley. Additionally, Borussia Dortmund borrowed him for half of 2023–24. Notably, he started the 2024 Champions League final during that spell.
