Zion Suzuki Aston Villa Player

Zion Suzuki at Aston Villa

Zion Suzuki joined Aston Villa from Parma in August 2026 and was immediately handed the No.1 shirt by Unai Emery.

The Japan international arrived as part of Villa’s major summer rebuild and quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Suzuki had already built a strong reputation during two seasons in Serie A before moving to Villa Park, but his first appearances in England have provided further evidence of why Villa invested heavily in him.

He started against Arsenal and Hull City in the Premier League before making his Champions League debut in Villa’s 3-2 victory over Club Brugge.

That European performance was particularly encouraging.

Suzuki made five saves as Villa protected their lead during a difficult second half, with our analysis explaining why Zion Suzuki is already showing the value of Aston Villa’s £30million decision.

He also kept his first Aston Villa clean sheet during the goalless Premier League draw with Hull City.

Why Aston Villa signed Zion Suzuki

Suzuki combines physical presence with the ability to contribute when Villa build attacks from the back.

At 190cm, he offers size and strength inside his penalty area, but his distribution is one of the most distinctive parts of his game.

That was evident shortly after his Premier League debut when Gary Neville was stunned by one of Suzuki’s passes against Arsenal.

Villa’s new goalkeeper has also explained why regular first-team football was crucial to his development.

Suzuki previously rejected the opportunity to join Manchester United while still playing in Japan because he wanted guaranteed minutes.

He later told The Sun that playing regularly was his priority, with our report explaining why Suzuki rejected Manchester United before eventually joining Aston Villa.

That decision took him through Sint-Truiden and Parma before he eventually reached the Premier League as an established first-choice goalkeeper.

Zion Suzuki’s career before Aston Villa

Suzuki began his senior career with Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan before moving to Belgian side Sint-Truiden.

Parma then brought him to Serie A in 2024.

He became their regular goalkeeper and continued to develop during two seasons in Italy before completing his move to Aston Villa.

Suzuki also arrived with significant international experience.

He represented Japan at the 2026 World Cup and is now firmly established within their senior squad.

His combination of international experience and regular top-level club football allowed Villa to place considerable responsibility on him immediately.

Is Zion Suzuki Aston Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper?

Yes.

Suzuki wears Aston Villa’s No.1 shirt and has established himself ahead of Marco Bizot in Emery’s current goalkeeper hierarchy.

He has started Villa’s recent Premier League and Champions League fixtures, including the victory over Club Brugge.

His performances are already becoming an important part of Villa’s season, particularly after the departure of Emiliano Martínez created a major change in one of the team’s most important positions.

Suzuki’s next challenge is to build consistency across an entire Premier League campaign.

A clean sheet against Hull followed by an impressive Champions League performance in Bruges represents an encouraging start.

His appearances, minutes and statistics will continue to be updated on this page throughout the 2026/27 season.
