Manchester City have been linked with Delph, who signed a four- and-a-half year deal earlier this year.
Aston Villa has been criticized for having a low release clause of under £10m in England international, Fabian Delph’s, contract.
Tony Cascarino, former Villa striker, has defended the Villains. He believes there was no choice but to put the low release clause in case the 25-year-old left on a free.
He told Sky Sports News HQ:
“The circumstances why Delph has a contract that has a release clause is he was nearly at the end of his previous contract… How can it be £10million? We’re at a stage where literally players have a blank sheet of paper and clubs say fill in the blanks and tell us what you want.”
He went on to slate the power that players have in recent times.
“Players have got so much power in the modern game… I feel sorry for the club, it’s the way the modern game is.”
Another vital player is Benteke, who is believed to have a release clause of £32.5m. Cascarino believes he won’t leave Villa Park for Anfield, as he was linked with a move to Liverpool.
He said:
“Christian at his very best is unplayable. His release clause is obviously a lot higher and suits Villa a lot more.
Aston Villa will need to do a lot if they would like to keep Benteke and Delph from leaving to Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively.
