Wilkins: Sacking Sherwood would be a “huge mistake”

Aston Villa assistant manager Ray Wilkins says that the club will be making a “huge mistake” if they decide to sack Tim Sherwood.

Reports over the weekend suggested that the Villa manager must win one of the club’s next two matches to save his job.

The first of those two games isn’t exactly easy either. They travel to Premier League champions Chelsea this weekend, and although Jose Mourinho’s men are enduring a bad run at present, not many teams win at Stamford Bridge.

The second game is at home to Swansea City, which seems much more winnable. The Swans haven’t won any of their last four league games and are yet to record a victory on the road this season.

Speaking on Alan Brazil’s Sport Breakfast on talkSPORT, Wilkins backed Sherwood and praised the job he’s done so far at the Villans:

I think [sacking Tim] would be a huge mistake because he’s an up and coming manager who did extremely well at Tottenham. Let’s not forget, it was only six or seven months ago that we were in the FA Cup final and staved off relegation so we really shouldn’t be talking about this type of situation.

Wilkins also suggested that Villa will go to Stamford Bridge with confidence due to the home side’s lack of form:

It’s very unusual to see Chelsea in this condition and we’re going to go there with a positive mindset and try to get the best result we can. We’re under no illusions, it’s going to be extremely tough for us but Chelsea are going through a bit of a difficult time at the moment, so it’s a good time for us to meet them.
